Evolent Next Generation ACO Partners Drive Down Cost of Care, Reap Benefits

January 25, 2021

More than $66 million in shared savings was earned across five health system partners in 2019.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released the 2019 results of its Next Generation Accountable Care Organization (NGACO) program, and Evolent's health system partners were high performers.

Five NGACOs that Evolent supported earned a combined $84 million in savings for Medicare, receiving shared savings payments of more than $66 million[1]. In addition, they outperformed other ACOs in the program in two key areas:

  • 5.3% average savings, as compared to 3.8% savings among other NGACOs
  • 95% average quality score, compared to 93.5% among other NGACOs

Another Evolent health system ACO partner, participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), achieved $6 million in gross savings in 2019, receiving a shared savings distribution of $4.5 million and a near-perfect quality score of 99%—tops for MSSP organizations in its region.

Our NGACO partners' cumulative success outpaced the overall NGACO group, even as the program's national savings have increased year after year. In the 2019 performance year, NGACOs achieved gross savings of $558 million, compared to $406 million in 2018 and $164 million in 2017.

Evolent's close, collaborative partnership with its ACO partners and approach to managing total cost of care through its proprietary population health technology and capabilities have helped drive these strong results.

Launched in 2016, the NGACO program is a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation demonstration program that carries the greatest potential upside and downside for organizations taking responsibility for total cost of care. This program is set to expire at the end of 2021, and Evolent is positioned well to support these partners in their move to new two-sided risk models.

Evolent's population health capabilities are also helping drive significant results for a spectrum of partners taking accountability for clinical and financial performance, including independent providers, provider-sponsored health plans and progressive-minded health plans.

[1] Performance data was not reported for a sixth Evolent NGACO partner, which was among four NGACOs nationally that deferred their financial settlements for the 2019 performance period.
